Welcome to Crete!

    

     Crete is a first-class city with a population of 6,028 (2000 census).  Crete has a Mayor-Council form of government with a Mayor and six council members elected to four year terms.  The positions of City Clerk/Treasurer, City Attorney, Director of Public Works, Chief of Police and Fire Chief are appointed by the Mayor to serve four year terms.

 

     The 2005-2006 actual budget is $26,816,480.  The municipal levy is .387248.  The actual valuation of the City of Crete is $190,243,409.  In addition to the 5.5% Nebraska sales tax, a 1% city sales tax is imposed in Crete.  The revenue generated by the city sales tax is used entirely for property tax relief.

Public Works

 

     Electric, waterwastewater and solid waste services in the community are provided by the City of Crete.  The City owns a generating plant capable of generating 15.6 MW with a distribution system consisting of 3 substations. Click here for more information


     The streets and storm sewer system within city limits are also maintained by the Departments of Public Works.  For information regarding maintenance, street closings, and snow removal contact the Public Works Department, 243 E. 13th Street, 402-826-4312.

 

     Mandatory refuse service is franchised through The Garbage Company.  (more) Crete residents may also take their refuse and yard waste to the landfill transfer station located north of Highway 33 on Boswell Avenue.  Hours are Wednesdays 1:00-6:00 and Saturdays 9:00-5:00.

Recycling


     The Crete Recycling Center is located on South Main Street just inside city limits.  The facilities are owned by the City but privately operated.  In 2004 new recycling roll-offs were purchased in part with grant money from the Nebraska Environmental Trust.  The Center accepts the following items:  newspaper, aluminum cans, colored plastics, tin cans, cardboard, milk jugs, magazines, and glass.  The collection trailers are accessible to the public during daylight hours.

Library

 

     Crete Public Library offers a wide range of resources to the community, housing a collection of 32,285 volumes, and providing internet access as well.  Children’s programs include Preschool and After School Story Time sessions during the school year and a Summer Reading Program.  An extensive outreach service for elderly patrons is offered at four sites throughout the community and book delivery for homebound patrons is available as well.

Law Enforcement

 

     The Crete Police Department operates 24 hours a day with 11 sworn officers and 5 telecommunicators and 2 Community Service Officers. 

 

     Crete has an enhanced 9-1-1 system and operates Saline County’s only law enforcement teletype system.  The police station is located at 1945 Forest Avenue, just south of Highway 33.  The non-emergency telephone number is 402-826-4311. (more…)

Emergency Services

 

     Crete Volunteer Fire & Rescue provides the community with fire protection and contracts with Saline County Rural Fire District and Highland Rural Fire District to provide protection to areas outside of city limits.  Approved for 50 members the department currently has 43 active members.

 

     The department is 100% volunteer.  First responders are usually on scene anywhere in city limits within 1 – 2 minutes.  In 2006, the department responded to over 350 medical, 100 fire and 63 calls for miscellaneous reasons such as storm watches and searches for missing persons. (more…)

Senior Surrey

 

     The City owns and operates a handicap accessible “surrey” within city limits, Monday – Friday, which is available to any resident.  For a minimal fee-per-ride, the mobility of senior citizens is greatly enhanced by this service.  For additional information contact the Police Department at 402-826-4311.

Airport

 

     Crete Municipal Airport has a 4,200 ft. paved and lighted runway and a 3,400 ft. sod runway.  Other features include VVASI, VORDME, NDB-2 approaches, instrument approach, rotating beacon, Unicorn 122.8, hangars, ties downs, lighted wind sock, fuel, aircraft rental and sales, training, full-time attendant and repairs.

 

     The elevation at the airport is 1,498 ft., the latitude is 40°37’, and the longitude is 96°56’.  The airport is located east of Crete on 13th Street.  For additional information call 402-826-4408,

Parks Department

 

     Crete has a well-maintained system of parks and recreation facilities.  Recreational opportunities in Crete include 130 acres of public park with picnic shelters, tennis/basketball courts, swimming pool, athletic fields, roller skating rink, and numerous playground areas.  These areas are maintained by the Parks Department of the Public Works.

Recreation Department

 

     The Crete Recreation sponsored programs include basketball, baseball, softball, Hershey track meet, spring and fall soccer, teen nights, flag football, swim team, water aerobics, and volleyball.  Other recreational opportunities include swimming lessons, dance, gymnastics, karate, golf, wrestling, computer classes, and reading and craft activities at the library. Crete Chamber of Commerce

Medical Services

 

     The City of Crete is fortunate to have excellent medical services.  The Crete Area Medical Center, a subsidiary of Bryan LGH, features 25 private patient rooms, two surgery suites, physical therapy and cardiac rehabilitation space, a trauma area within the emergency department and a helicopter pad.

 

     The residents of Crete and surrounding area have the opportunity to use the services of two fully staffed medical clinics, Crete Medical Center Clinic and Saline Medical Specialties.

    

    Garden Square, an assisted living care facility, built in 1996 accommodates 40 residents.  The Crete Manor, a 108-bed skilled nursing facility provides care for both short and long term stays with a unique 14 bed Alzheimer’s secure care unit.  Tabitha Nursing Center at Crete also provides long and short term care along with hospice services and home health care.

Housing

     Crete has a variety of owner and rental units available in low, moderate and high-income level housing.

 

     The Crete Housing Authority administers a public housing project for the elderly, handicapped, and disabled and a Section * Housing Assistance Certificate Program.  For additional information contact Carol Murphy 402-826-2678.

 

     Blue River Community Action, Inc. (BVCA) provides housing assistance to eligible participants in Saline and surrounding counties.  Contact BVCA at 826-2376 for more information.

Crete Public Schools

St. James Elementary School

     Crete also has one private elementary, St. James Catholic School.  With an enrollment of 76 students attend St. James through the eight grade.  Contact information at 402-826-2318


ESU #6

     Crete is a member of Educational Service Unit (ESU) #6 is headquartered in Milford.  ESU #6 serves five counties by coordinating services such as leasing of media materials, leasing of specialized equipment for instructional programs and cooperative purchasing and providing special education.

Doane College

 

     Crete is the home of Doane College.  Doane offers Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees in 40 areas of study with five divisions:  science, mathematics and information science and technology, arts and humanities; social science; education and physical education; and business.

 

    Doane College is the oldest four-year, private liberal arts institution in Nebraska.  The campus rests on 300 acres which includes three buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places.  (more…)

Business

 

     Area residents have an abundance of businesses to serve their needs.  Downtown boasts a wide variety of businesses including financial institutions, grocery, hardware, floral, sports, thrift, and variety shops.  Crete also has a number of eating establishments, both fast food and relaxed family dining, offering almost anything your tastebuds crave.

 

     New to Crete is a WalMart Super Center.  Located in the city’s industrial area the center opened in June 2007.

Industry

 

     The Crete community is fortunate to have a significant industrial base with four major manufacturers.  These are – Crete Mills (a division of Bunge Milling), Douglas Manufacturing, Nestle/Purina (a division of Nestle International), and Farmland Foods.  A number of smaller industries have located in Crete throughout the years.  Each of them contributes to the economic health, growth and stability of the community.
